For the design of the propeller of super-cavitations, we proceeded according to the proposal developed by Kudo et al. (2001), which was to stimulate the cavitations by making a groove on the side of the blade with the lowest pressure. To establish the location of the groove or cavitator and achieve the predetermined objective, computational simulations were carried out of the pressure distribution in the hydro-dynamic profiles along the blade. Once the zone was identified, two propellers were built, a conventional one and another with grooves for its later testing which would allow us to know the difference in behavior between them. The tests proved that the propeller with grooves presented an increase in efficiency, and therefore, in the thrust speed, with a noticeable shifting of the maximum efficiency towards higher angular velocities than those of the design.

A method to evaluate the performance was developed in this study, according to the antifouling and anticorrosive efficiency, of 6 commercial antifouling systems in the plants of Mamonal and Bocagrande in the Bay of Cartagena. The general performance of the coatings was determined through the qualification of the resistance to the biofouling and the integrity of the antifouling and of the anticorrosive film. Additionally, a follow-up of the microbiologic and photochemical parameters were carried out of the marine media in the area of exposition, according to which both zones of study presented favorable conditions for the development of organisms with high percentages of fouling coating on control coupons. In the Plant of Mamonal, the systems showed a better antifouling efficiency regarding the Plant of Bocagrande. According to the type of coating, the auto-po lishing presented a better performance compared to the soluble and insoluble type matrix coating.

A Diagnostic of Diesel-Electric Propulsion for Ships
Narciso Pereira, Newton

Paternina Arboleda, Carlos Daniel

Santos Neves, Marcelo

Rodríguez, Claudio A.
Merino, Jorge A.

Juzga León, Giovanni A.
Villalba Rodríguez, Reinaldo
Rueda Sarmiento, Ronald

A nuevo a viejo.

Fuzzy Predictive Model of the Vertical Acceleration of a High Speed Vessel in Pitch Motion
Gil Navia, Francisco
Contreras Montes, Juan

Applications of Optimization in Early Stage Ship Design
Parsons, Michael G.

Mission Configurable Modular Craft Concept Study
Savander, Brant R.
Troesch, Armin

Designing for Damage Stability and Survivability – Contemporary Developments and Implementation
Vassalos, Dracos

Stability and dynamical effects of water on deck on the survivability of small fishing vessels
Francescutto, Alberto

Integrating topology and shape optimization: a way to reduce weight in structural ship design
Méndez Algarra, Germán A.

SPH Boundary Deficiency Correction for Improved Boundary Conditions at Deformable Surfaces
Jones, Van
Yang, Qing
McCue-Weil, Leigh

Metamodeling Techniques for Multidimensional Ship Design Problems
Backlund, Peter B.
Shahan, David
Seepersad, Carolyn C.

Application of Sampling Based Model Predictive Control to an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
Caldwell, Charmane V.
Dunlap, Damion D.
Collins, Emmanuel G.

Passenger submarine concept design for oil production offshore systems
Lobão de Almeida, Thiago
Universidade de São Paulo. Brazil.
Coracini Tonacio, Victor
Universidade de São Paulo. Brazil.
The paper proposes an innovative solution to transport workers of offshore oil production platforms from the coast to their units, which operate at the Pre-Salt exploration, 300 km from the coast. A passenger submarine concept design was developed, justified by the range of practical obstacles observed in the current modes of transportation, helicopters and supply boats. Requirements like operational depth (100 m), passenger capacity (250 people), and cruising speed (minimum 13.4 knots) are defined, based on estimates. Firstly, it seeks the adoption of air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems, by fuel cells (PEMFC). However, the work progress leads to an entire electric propulsion system. The internal arrangement is elaborated, regarding passenger comfort, structural constraints, allocation of batteries and ballast tanks. Then, after a hydrodynamic hull optimization, by Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis, we provide a final configuration with 100-m length and 9.7-m diameter, operational speed of 16 kt, and autonomy of 26 hours.

Carbon and stainless steel, as well as Fe-Nb-Cr-W coatings were deposited on steel substrates by using electric arc spray, and its possibility of applying such coatings in the naval industry was analyzed. In order to achieve this, the coating microstructure was characterized before and after the corrosion, abrasive wear, and thermal barrier tests. Corrosion resistance was analyzed via potenciodynamic polarization test using a NaCl electrolyte at 3%; abrasive wear resistance was measured by using a three-component system following ASTM G-65 recommendations, while quality control as thermal barriers was studied by using EIS tests. Scanning Electron Microscopy, optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the microstructure of the coatings.

Aid in the design of antenna arrays with electronic phase steering using Matlab®
Gil Navia, Francisco José
Departamento de Armas y Electrónica de la Armada Nacional, Fuerza Naval de Caribe, Base Naval 1. Colombia.
Antenna arrays have been used since the 1950s in multiple applications; however, it was not until recent years that, given progress in digital technologies, this application has become the fastest and most varied development in the radar world. The main motivation for their development is that they permit electronic phase steering that implies extreme phase agility, while also being tolerant to failure because of the amount of elements that comprise them. They also permit the reduction of side lobes by controlling the amplitude of each element.Because it is a currently applied technology, but with many aspects under development, it is necessary to enter this field and generate the required tools including those for computer assisted prototyping. Because of the aforementioned, this work sought to use Matlab® to create virtual prototypes of arrays that permit visualizing an approach to their real behavior stemming from certain parameters.

Using anthropometrics in designing for enhanced crew performance
Ross, J.M.
High Ground Initiatives LLC http://highgroundinitiatives.com
Today’s naval ship or craft designer routinely uses the principles of human factors (ergonomics) as a way to help enhance crew performance. But even though many aspects of human factors are well known, certain important categories often remain underutilized. One of these categories is anthropometrics, the study of human body dimensions and capabilities. Anthropometrics analyzes age, gender, and other data within populations of people, such as the general population of a nation or the special population of that nation’s active duty naval personnel. For the naval designer, anthropometrics helps to ensure adequate ergonomic design for the population from which the crew is drawn. The naval designer can address in a quantifiable manner issues such as lines of sight, console height and valve handle accessibility. When anthropometric principles are thus applied, the ship better fits the capabilities and limitations of the crew, resulting in enhanced crew performance.

Recent developments in the design of fast ships
Gelling, J. L.
Keuning, J. A.
TU Delft, Delft University of Technology - Shiphydromechanics Department.
During the last twenty years, Damen Shipyards, a multinational shipbuilding group with 6000 employees worldwide, has done extensive research on the development of hull designs for fast monohull vessels. In the 1990s the Enlarged Ship Concept was developed, leading to highly improved sea keeping capabilities and vessel behaviour in waves at high speed. This hull design concept was applied in the Damen SPa 4207 patrol vessel and has proven extremely successful, reducing vertical accelerations by 50% and, thus, allowing vessels to keep operating at high speed in waves. Over 25 units of the Damen SPa 4207 have been delivered so far. After the successful introduction of the Enlarged Ship Concept, Damen and Delft University continued developing the next generation hull form: the axebow design. Compared to the already good sea keeping capacities of the Enlarged Ship Concept, model tests indicated a further reduction of vertical accelerations. This was proven by real-time measurements on the first built axebow vessels in 2006 and 2007. In the last 3 years, over 30 axe bow supply vessels have been delivered to very satisfied operators. As a next step, Damen has applied the axe bow design to the latest patrol vessel design, the Damen SPa 5009. The first vessel of this design is currently under construction and its trials are scheduled by the end of 2011. The paper describes the background of the research done by Damen and Delft University, focusing on the mathematical and scientific aspects of the axebow design and its application on various ship types. The development and design of the latest Damen patrol vessel, SPa 5009, will be introduced, describing its seakeeping performance, operatability and crew ergonomics. Finally, the paper will mention the current and future research topics that Damen and Delft University are working on together, identifying the developments of the future generation patrol vessels.

Methodology and results of full scale maneuvering trials for Riverine Support Patrol Vessel “RSPV”, built by COTECMAR for the Colombian Navy are presented. This ship is equipped with a “Pump – Jet” propulsion system and the hull corresponds to a wide-hull with a high Beam – Draft ratio (B/T=9.5). Tests were based on the results of simulation of turning diameters obtained from TRIBON M3˝ design software, applying techniques of Design of Experiments “DOE”, to rationalize the number of runs in different conditions of water depth, ship speed, and rudder angle. Results validate the excellent performance of this class of ship and show that turning diameter and other maneuvering characteristics improve with decreasing water depth.

Application-optimised propulsion systems for energy-efficient operation
Kaul, Stefan

SCHOTTEL GmbH, Spay/Rhine, Germany.
Müller, Lutz
SCHOTTEL GmbH, Spay/Rhine, Germany.
Today, optimal propellers are designed by using advanced numerical methods. Major revolutionary improvements cannot be expected. More essential are the design conditions and the optimal adaptation of the propulsion system according to the operational requirements. The selection and optimisation of the propulsion system based on a systematic analysis of the ship’s requirements and the operation profile are the prerequisites for reliable and energy-efficient propulsion. Solutions are presented, which accommodate these issues with a focus on steerable rudderpropellers. Considerations include the efficiency potential of the propulsor itself, optimisation of the engine propeller interaction, and optimisation of a demandresponsive energy supply. The propeller-thruster interaction is complex, but offers some potential for optimisation. Results of examinations show this. The power distribution between multiple propellers at high loads of limited propeller diameters increases the efficiency. This can be done by double-propeller systems like the SCHOTTEL TwinPropeller or by distributing the power on several thrusters. This distributed propulsion offers economic operation and an increased lifetime by means of the demandresponsive use of energy. An efficiency-optimized electric motor instead of the upper gear box reduces the mechanical losses in the case of diesel-electric propulsion. An example: the SCHOTTEL CombiDrive.

This paper introduces a method to generate autopilots for ship headings by using issues from the observation of control actions performed by human operators. The controller is designed based on fuzzy logic and uses triangular membership functions for the antecedent and consequent functions for Singleton type. For an automatic adjustment of the consequential, the recursive least squares method was used. This method is used to generate and validate the course driver of a 350-m tanker, at different load conditions.

Currently, offshore operations are considered activities with high impact on the economy, which standsin direct relation to the products of great importance and value for diverse economic sectors. Thus, itbecomes necessary to implement new technologies that make the manipulation of these products fasterand easier. In this work, the authors introduce the problem in offshore cargo transfer operations. Thisproblem involves different kinds of areas: logistics, dynamics, and control are some of them. The authorspresent an approach for the last two. In the dynamic problem is presented a study on the dynamics of asuspended load connected to a crane via a mechanism with two prismatic degrees of freedom. The studiesshow the complex large-amplitude motion of the load given the visibly nonlinear behavior of the ship. Therefore, the development of a fuzzy controller was necessary to decrease oscillations and position theload in one definitive point of interest. The work presents the test results, demonstrating that this typeof manipulator in combination with an effective control strategy allows for the reduction of oscillationsin offshore activities.

On maritime transport costs, evolution, and forecast
Polo, Gerardo
Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Navales. Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Madrid, España.
During recent years of economic euphoria, globalization, motor of development, has been possible due to the existence of a fast, efficient, and economic maritime transport. The technological development based on scale economies, improvement of cargo-handling systems, and specialization has allowed putting on the market vessels with very competitive costs. In these years of a bright freight market, increased costs seemed not to be of much concern, so that the problem was not approached with the necessary firmness. Nowadays, things have changed: freight rates have sunk, prices of ships have fallen, and the crisis has reached ship owners. The costs, nevertheless, are still rising, with the exception of 2009 in which, for the first time in ten years, costs of operations were sensibly reduced. In the paper, the evolution of the main components of the costs of the maritime transport are analyzed, studying the current situation of such, as well as the forecasts for the near future.

Shipbuilding and new requirements to reduce the environmental impact of ships: New technological challenges and business opportunities
Beltrán, Publio
Naval Architect and Marine Engineer. Director TSI- Técnicas y Servicios de Ingeniería, S. L. Madrid, España.
New and increasingly demanding requirements of reducing the environmental impact of all types ofships from all countries, along with regulatory institutions like the new "Green Policy" of the EuropeanUnion, leads to the development of a series of regulations/directives, which will immediately affect boththe owner and the builders worldwide. This requires introducing modifications in the vessel design tofulfill these requirements and, ultimately, improve their exploitation while avoiding penalties and/orrestrictions. Awareness of these requirements by some Spanish owners has allowed Spanish shipbuildingto be positioned strategically at the forefront of technology to fulfill these requirements. This work, aftera review of those Directives affecting ship design, focuses on the presentation of the results obtained intwo Ro-Ro Vessels. These vessels, given their design and performances, are a "technological reference"in the new scenario of high environmental performance requirements: Noise and vibrations on board, noise radiated to the harbor, and noise radiated to the water.

The paper shows the evaluation of applying models to improve efficiency in management of warehousesused in shipyards, focused on pick up, packing, and shipping activities, supported among others on theproposal by Rosenblatt and Roll (1984) to optimize the layout for storage and handling of materials neededfor ship construction and repair. Besides proposing the best physical layout for the storage of goods, themodel seeks to minimize three types of costs: costs related to the initial investment (construction andmaintenance), shortage costs, and costs associated with storage policies. The optimal design is foundthrough analytical optimization and simulation techniques.

Since their beginning, companies establish procedures to observe their competitors. Methods for obtaining this kind of information have evolved with the internet era; a plethora of tools is nowadays available for this job. As a consequence, a new problem has emerged: documentary noise, keeping companies from being able to process and benefit from the huge amount of information gathered. Strategic planning mainly relies on obtaining environmental knowledge, so companies need help on dealing with this documentary noise; technological surveillance and benchmarking are preferred methodologies to achieve this objective, coping with data produced by automatic internet tools like search engines and others. Qualified results of better nature are produced by bringing new theories on information gathering and processing intoboth tools. This article exposes empirical results on the application of a demonstrative technological surveillance system based on different R&D management structures, relying on benchmarking indicators for the naval and aeronautics industries.

Project and construction of oceanographic and faisheries research vessels in Spain
Núñez Basáñez, José Fernando
Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Navales. Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Doctor Ingeniero Naval. Catedrático de Universidad. Madrid, España.
The objective of the paper is to analyze and present the specific and innovative characteristics of the multipurpose oceanographic vessels that are currently being built in Spain. The main requirement in these types of vessels is the low level of noise radiated to the water, Silent Platform, according to ICES 209, to satisfactorily exploit the evaluation of the Fishing Resources and its dynamic position capacity for operations with remote operating vehicles. These vessels are designed to carry out a wide range of research activities and have, therefore, the most modern facilities, laboratories, and equipment to undertake scientific missions in the different marine disciplines: Marine Geology, Physical Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Pollution, Marine Biology, and Fisheries.

The Elastic Finite Element Method based on the inherent strain theory is used to predict the welding distortion of ship structures. In addition, a method to predict welding distortion of complex structures by using elastic FEM is presented. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a typical case of a ship's structure is examined and the resulting welding distortion is compared to that obtained by using thermal elastic-plastic finite element method.

This research was based on the analysis of the weldability of aluminum joints, Alloy GL AW 5083 H116, with filler AWS 5.10 ER 5183 by GMAW-P process to determine the conditions of the heat-affected zone in the base material, depending on the heat input for the GMAW-P process with different pulsed technologies available in Colombia. The variables considered within this study were: welding positions (horizontal, vertical up, and overhead), type of welded joints (butt and fillet), and parameters for welding equipment (voltage, current, speed, power supply, speed development), and protective gas used (Argon, 100%). Non-destructive and destructive testing techniques were used to characterize the discontinuities found and the criteria to accept or reject the AWS D1.2 code (STRUCTURAL WELDING CODE - ALUMINUM by the AMERICAN WELDING SOCIETY). As a result, the investigation yielded the conditions for the application of filler material (ER 5183) on base material (alloy AW5083 GL H116), supported by Welding Procedure Specifications Documents (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) to implement in aluminum welding at the COTECMAR shipyard.

Virtual shooting training has become very attractive because of possible cost reductions and precise evaluation. This article describes the development of a shooting simulator to train soldiers in fluvial combat. This simulator combines the motion of a mechanical platform with virtual imagery and sound to produce an immersive scenario for training purposes. Our prototype, which is in its last phase of construction, has four training tasks with three levels of difficulty. Initially, each task is defined in terms of a virtual trajectory, used by our custom-based motion platform to produce realistic movements, based on a simple dynamic model from real measurements. Our visualization, sound effects, and metrics are implemented on the Torque game engine. Finally, a postprocessor system computes a metrics report.

Side-boat tow to test the influence of flaps in a 2-meter planing craft model
Marín, José R.
Faculty of Maritime Engineering, ESPOL. Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Benites, Daniela A.
Naval Engineer, Guayaquil, Ecuador.
A small craft is considered in the planing regime when its Froude number is higher than 1.2, and under that condition its weight is mainly supported by hydrodynamic pressure acting on the bottom of the hull. It is also known that installing stern flaps at a certain angle from the bottom line will alter the trim angle and, as a consequence, the resistance exerted by the water. In this work, using the classical work from Savitsky, the resistance on a planing craft is estimated, including the effect of flaps, and then the influence of those appendages on the hydrodynamic behavior of a craft of local design was experimentally verified. The wooden model was 2.0 meters long and was side towed from an outboard powered boat, with a 3.2-m arm, in a small artificial lake. The tests were run between 5 and 12 knots, with uneven intervals due to the outboard control; the model was towed without and with flaps at 5 and 10°. Finally, experimental and empirical results for towing force and trim angle were plotted. In some of the experimental curves the presence of humps may be identified, but less pronounced than with the theoretical results. Experimental resistance values are lower than those obtained from Savistky’s formulation for no flaps; in the case of flaps at 5°, the agreement in trim angle was very good. Finally, the benefit of flaps on the performance of the planing model was corroborated, but it should be emphasized that this improvement is only valid for a certain velocity range.

Dynamic modeling of trawl fishing gear components
Freiria Pereira, Jorge
Facultad de Ingeniería, CP 11300 Montevideo, Montevideo, Uruguay.
A numerical model has been developed to calculate the resistance of the different components of a trawling gear, by deduction of the drag and lift components. For this purpose, mathematical models have been considered for all the elements, such as trawl cables, floats, doors, and the net itself. The most important contribution of this numerical model is that the action of forces upon different elements permits modifying the geometric configuration of the complete set with a mutual accommodation of resistance and geometry, simulating the actual dynamics, where forces and geometry converge toward an equilibrium state. Some results obtained from actual fishing gear with data obtained from sensors during sea trials are used to compare the results of the simulator.

This article presents an analysis of the different modeling methods for predicting the radar cross section of surface ships. In the analysis, we studied the effect of different factors in vessel construction regarding the amount of electromagnetic energy returning to a radar source, such as the handling of shapes, use of different materials, and vessel size. We can see the different evaluation methods of the radar cross section and the software tools available to determine an appropriate methodology for adoption by the Colombian Navy and their subsequent integration with the design process and optimization of warships.

Accessibility as a design concept is generally applied in land constructions; however, the medical character of the case study requires it to be considered in the design process as of its conceptual stage. The riverine ambulatory care center (RACC) is a mobile health unit to carry out medical missions in populations located on the riverbanks; given the RACC dimensions, these have limited medical services to primary care and health brigades. Physical barriers1 are the causes for an environment being inaccessible; to eliminate them, from the RACC, an analysis and redesign was performed of the conceptual proposal, based on standards for accessibility, medical spaces, and ships. Two basic moments were taken for intervention, access and interior circulation, yielding as a result the design of an integrated system of products that eliminate the physical barriers from the environment, permitting boarding and offering medical services under equal, comfortable, and safe conditions. Accessibility as modifier of the environment to improve the quality of life of users should not only be applied in medical ships, this study opens an opportunity for industry to optimize the physical environment of other types of ships by applying this concept.

This work presents the study of the sea response on the vertical plane for a 40-m length overall coastal patrol vessel (CPV-40) of Colombia’s National Navy. The condition studied is at full load and at patrol and maximum speeds. First, we analyzed the response for regular waves with incidence angles of 90º, 120º, 150º, and 180º, obtaining the response for heave and pitch motions through the SCORES program that uses the method called “girdle theory”. From the response, it was verifiedthat the amplitudeof the response is proportional to the amplitudeof the incident wave. Thereafter, the calculation of the vertical acceleration was made for four ship positions: bow, stern, cabin, and bridge, with the greatest vertical accelerations on the bow. Finally, the study was conducted for irregular sea considering as measuring parameters the vertical acceleration on the bridge and the pitching angle for the patrol operation, from the NATO document, compliance was verified of the study parameters at RMS level. It was found that for this condition the vessel complies and, hence, the personnel will not be affected in the performance of their functions.

In order to achieve automation of the plate forming process by line heating, it is necessary to know in advance the deformation to be obtained under specific heating conditions. Currently, different methods exist to predict deformation, but these are limited to specific applications and most of them depend on the computational capacity so that only simple structures can be analyzed. In this paper, a neural network model that can accurately predict distortions produced during the plate forming process by line heating, for a wide range of initial conditions including large structures, is presented. Results were compared with data existing in the literature showing excellent performance. Excellent results were obtained for those cases out of the range of the training data.

In seakeeping terminology, the Quiescent Period is known as the period of calm in rough waters to allow the ship to perform operations such as landing aircrafts and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), aswell as the entry of landing crafts in the basin. Quiescence refers to the interval of time where all ship motions are within acceptable limits to perform a desired activity. Among the key issues for Quiescent Period Prediction is to be able to measure waves from a suitable distance and predict ship motions in response to waves encountered; both aspects are crucial and must be taken into account. Many of the opearations performed at sea are carried under severe weather conditions, as a result of this situation there is a need to determine this called “window of opportunity” that allows carrying them out. The paper aims to explain from the point of view of Quiescent Period Prediction, the most promising wave measurement systems, which are currently based on radar, but the main question is that if we want predictions a few seconds ahead, it will be appropriate to measure waves at a distance of some hundreds of meters, describing the new mathematical model based on wavelets in determining the spread of the waves from their initial measurement until they reach the vessel.

Application of Operational Effectiveness Models in Naval Ship concept exploration and design
Brown, Alan J.
Virginia Polytechnic and State University
Traditionally, the Concept and Requirements Exploration process is the first stage of ship design. Concept and Requirements Exploration responds to a stated mission need with early high-level assessment of a broad range of ship design options and technologies. Our design group uses a Multi-Objective Optimization approach to explore the design space and identify non-dominated designs ranked by cost, risk, and effectiveness. Our method of calculating effectiveness in this approach has, in the past, been based on expert opinion. In this study, the use of a more direct physics-based Operational Effectiveness Model approach is considered to provide greater confidence in the validity of effectiveness results and a perception that results are more unbiased and rational. This approach requires significant early investment. How much analysis is enough and is there significant payoff for this significant effort? This paper presents this approach and explores these questions.

A Frigate in 10 years - Challenges and Opportunities
Lamb, Thomas
College of Engineering
Colombia is involved in preliminary philosophies regarding the acquisition of frigates in the next 10 years. This presents many challenges as well as opportunities. This not a unique situation as many maritime countries have struggled with this matter over the past 50 years. The question that quickly arises is whether a country should design and construct new naval ships themself or follow one or a combination of the many options that have been used over this period. This presentation will review these options as both challenges and opportunities and hopefully provide a starting point for important discussions of this subject.

This paper shows experimental and numerical results of three types of appendages on forward resistance reduction of displacement and semidisplacement hulls. Forward resistance results were obtained by using Computational Fluid Dynamics and towing tank tests. The appendages evaluated are stern flaps and interceptors for displacement hulls and spray railspray rails for a semiplaning hull. The experiments are independent from each other and no research was undertaken to include the combined effect of appendages on a single hull. The predicted reduction in forward resistance in all three tested devices is around 5-10%, showing potential for fuel saving through the evaluation of hydrodynamic effects of energy saving appendages.

Design based on reliability of naval multilayer fiber composite panels using evolutionary algorithms and stochastic structural mechanics
Useche, Jairo F.
Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar
Giraldo, Guillermo
Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar
The complexity of sea wave loads and the number of design variables involved in the design of laminated composites for naval applications makes this a challenging problem. Traditional methodologies for engineering design and analysis are not suitable to deal with these kinds of design problems. This work presents a methodology based on evolutionary algorithms and stochastic structural mechanics to design high-reliability naval multilayer composite structural panels.. The mechanical response of structural panels was modeled by using the Multilayer First Order Shear Deformable Plate Theory and the Finite Element Method. Sea wave loads were modeled as stochastic dynamic loads by using the Simulation Based Reliability Analysis approach. The structural reliability of the panel, as a function of the composite ply’s fiber direction, was considered a design variable. In order to maximize the structural reliability, an optimization methodology based on Genetic Algorithms was proposed. For the design process, a computational code using FORTRAN® and the OpenMP® library for parallel computing was developed. The proposed methodology was applied to the design of composite naval panels and results were compared to those obtained through traditional design methodologies. The results show increased reliability of the panels in all cases analyzed. The proposed methodology is, thus, shown as a reliable engineering tool to optimize the structural performance of existing designs.

Analysis of most frequent cases of vibration in propulsion systems
Domínguez Ruíz, Franklin Jhonny
Tecnavin S.A.
This study is a review of cases of propulsion systems in which noise, vibration, or fracture problems have existed. Case studies are presented on passenger vessels, tugboats, tankers, and ferry boats. Each case is addressed based on lateral, torsional, axial vibration analysis, as well as the case analysis of the possible coupling of frequencies or possible defect or deterioration of a component. Based on the cases, a summary is presented of inertial masses of each system analyzed to establish possible problems and benchmark statistical considerations when selecting the components of a propulsion system. Calculations were performed using the ShaftDesigner software from Machine Support, Holland and Torcal software from Tecnavin S. A.

Isotropic Modeling of a Composite Panel of the Stern of a Fiberglass Boat Propelled by an Outboard Motor
Townsend Valencia, Patrick
Navalocean
We performed a theoretical and experimental study to define the best way to model the finite element sandwich structure aft of a fiberglass boat less than 15 meters in length, using an isotropic linear mathematical model that fits anisotropic material conditions. This is done by defining the properties of the ship’s fiberglass resin structure, which is representative of the influence of the forces acting during the glide on the geometry of the entire vessel. Formulation of the Finite Elements Method is presented, which works on the mathematical model to define the limitations of the results obtained. Isotropic material adjustment is calculated using Halpin-Tsai laws, developing its mathematical formulation for restrictions of modulus data entered as the finite element program experimentally calculated for each of the sandwich materials. The best-fit mathematical presentation to the modulus of the composite tool justifies the calculation thereof.

Technical School, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro
During rescue operations of stranded vessels, it is essential to make immediate and reliable decisions to optimize the successful salvage potential and minimize risks of environmental damages and cost impacts. Pursuant to this scenario, the need arises for a numerical tool, which can more accurately forecast the stability conditions experienced by a vessel after running aground and help in the refloating operations of the unit. This study seeks to develop an adequate calculus systematization, which provides analytical capabilities for operational situations in case of stranding, thereby, supporting the decisionmaking process in these risk situations.

Cotecmar
A synthesis model for the concept design of a submarine is developed consisting of a parametric definition of the hull geometry, a maneuverability model based on slender-body theory, and a resistance formulation. This coupled model is suitable to be treated by a metaheuristic multiobjective optimization technique (a genetic algorithm) to find a set of design options that satisfy the need to minimize simultaneously the turning diameter and the resistance generated. According to typical data found in submarines like the one analyzed herein, the boundaries and some constraints are set for the design variables. Finally, some solutions for this design case are obtained considering the criteria adopted in this study.

The Most Recent Noise & Vibration Assessment of the European Fleet, within the Framework of the “SILENV Project”
Beltrán Palomo, Publio
TSI-Técnicas y Servicios de Ingeniería
The EU’s new “Green Policy” to reduce the environmental impact of all types of vessels is generating new Directives that shall affect the Shipbuilding Industry. As a direct consequence, an intense debate has been opened with the participation of all the players involved: the European Commission, Marine Institutions, Shipbuilding Industry, Marine Sector, and Scientific Community. Participation of the authors in the SILENV, BESST, and AQUO projects within the FP7 has permitted noticing that for the complete assessment of the ships’ environmental impact it is essential to introduce the new so-called Noise & Vibration – Full Signature indicator. In addition to the well-known topics of Noise & Vibration (N&V) on board, it includes new ones: Noise Radiated to Harbour and Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) by the ships. Both, but especially the latter (URN) became the most outstanding novelty and the biggest challenge to be technically solved. In this sense, it is essential to know the “Starting Point”: How far is the current European Fleet from the Standard Regulations and from other Directives that will soon be compulsory? And which are the technical reasons and root causes of these deviations? To address these issues within the framework of the SILENV Project, the most recent N&V database compiled with 171 ships from the European Fleet and 12,000 N&V experimental data have been assessed. It became the largest ever N&V database in the marine sector, as well as a complete novelty. Therefore, the results, conclusions and recommendations obtained from it are of paramount importance to support current policies of the EC and other Marine Institutions that focus their efforts on combating the environmental impact of the ships.

The overall signature of a vessel comprises acoustic, magnetic, electric-field, pressure, and seismic radiations. Over the past years, the international community’s efforts have mainly centered on reducing the acoustic influence with the dual aim of decreasing the vessel’s detectability and reducing the levels of acoustic pollution generated in the marine environment. Nowadays, the need to act not only on the acoustic radiation but against the overall set of the vessel’s radiations is becoming increasingly clear, both in the military and the civilian fields, based on aspects like vessel stealthiness, security of harbor and critical infrastructures, and environmental protection. As a key element to achieve this goal, it is greatly important to have at our disposal highly modular and adaptable measurement systems covering the overall set of the vessel’s radiations, with a high capacity of data transmission to base centers to have the capacity to make measurements in all kinds of marine environments.

A Truly Sustainable Digital Transformation Model for the Naval Sector
Velandia, Gustavo
Ministerio de Defensa Nacional, Bogotá D.C.
This document aims to show the meaning and real implications of implementing a Digital Transformation in the naval sector, explaining its three components (People - Processes - Technology), as well as the consequences of the bad practices of its application through real cases of global resonance. Subsequently, an approximation to the requirements to carry it out in an adequate and sustainable manner are stated, by understanding the concepts of the executive level that will help strategic alignment and the application of tools to achieve it, and then explain how to design and execute a Digital Transformation Strategy in any organization. Finally, a model to create a sustainable Digital Naval Industry is offered, leveraged by Industry 4.0 technologies, presenting mechanisms such as the creation of a national and regional naval cluster, which allows free exchange of data and open information in real time, whose enabler will be the Unified NameSpace (UNS).

VORGES - A procedural Model for Total Ship System Engineering Develop by MTG MARINETECHNIK
Neumann, André
Naval vessels are highly complex and sophisticated systems. The core issue concerning the planning of a future naval vessel is to identify operational needs, respective requirements and corresponding technical solutions, which are afordable in line with the budget. Due to the complexity of a naval vessel, it is impossible to answer thisquestion by assigning a specific amount of money to a specific requirement. To address this issue, MTG developed the procedural model for total ship system engineering – called VORGES (VOrgehensmodell GEsamtentwurf Schiff) – that starts in the very early planning phase, enabling the procuring authority to generate a referencedesign that balances functional and technical requirements with the available budget. VORGES is an iterative and flexible process of continuous evolution that additionally involves the customer and end-user. With respectto user requirements, VORGES includes the generation of several conceptual and preliminary designs at different detail levels. The resulting design alternatives will be evaluated and compared against each other for critical factorslike life cycle costs, project risks, military performance or requirements fulfilment. This will enable the procuring authority to make a comprehensive decision for the optimum design at the highest e#ciency level of budget expenditure, hence, resulting in the formulation of the technical requirements for procurement.

Identification and Adaptive Fuzzy Control for Navigation Systems of Autonomus Vehicles
Contreras, Juan
Ariza, Manuel

Arbeláez, Julián
This article presents a simple method to generate the automatic course control of surface naval vehicles by using fuzzy logic to adjust the parameters of the PID controller. The fuzzy systems constructedto automatically adapt the parameters of the PID controller are Mamdani type and use functions oftriangular relevance for the antecedent and the consequent. An application to a real model is presented, exposing the identification process to obtain the mathematical model from experimental data, thetemporal analysis from the mathematical model, obtain the parameters from the PI controller, and theresults on course changes between 125° and 305°. Thereafter, and bearing in mind the range of Kp and Ti parameters in which the system is stable, a structure of a self-tunable fuzzy PI controller was presentedand implemented with notable improvement in the response system.

Analysis of Dynamic Stability of Planing Craft on the Vertical Plane
Algarín, Roberto
Tascón, Oscar
A dynamic model for the motion of planing craft on the vertical plane was developed; the motions ofsurge, heave, and pitch are coupled. Critical conditions that produce the inception of instability are evaluated. The Wagner model (1932) for 2D impact is extended for section with knuckles. Planing hullswere analyzed through the application of slender body theory. The results are compared with Tveitnes(2001), Peterson (1997), Savitsky (1964), Troesch (1992) and Celano (1998).

Reduction of Underwater Radiated Noise from Ships: New Shipbuilding Challenge. The Vessels "Ramón Margalef" and "Ángeles Alvariño" as Technological References of How to Build Silent Vessels
Beltrán Palomo, Publio
Abatement of noise radiated by all kinds of vessels, and specially Underwater-Radiated Noise, because of its impacton marine life, has become the most outstanding novelty and the most dificult challenge the shipbuilding industryhas ever faced. Hence, the industry seeks to other new solutions to comply with the new guidelines and requirementsthat have been recently introduced and promoted by the EU, marine institutions, and the scientific community. "isnew topic, already studied and solved by the navies because of their strategic requirements, is now in the limelight andall the different aspects are being studied and discussed among the different players mentioned. In this new trend, theappearance of some class notations with “different limits”, assertions such as that the “propeller” is the major noise source, and the absence of consensus among the biological community about what should be the limits (for not affecting marine fauna), it is difficult to define the technological steps that should be followed. Until a consistent agreement is reached, the shipbuilding industry and the naval engineers will be “fighting against a ghost”. Within this “confusing scenario”, this paper is a clear example of how the Spanish shipbuilding industry is moving ahead to reduce the impact of new ships. The dynamic and acoustic design, developed by the authors, of the fishing research vessels “Ramón Margalef” and “Ángeles Alvariño” for the Oceanographic Spanish Institute and the experimental results obtained, in full compliance with ICES N°209 Underwater-Radiated Noise requirements, makes them reference vessels for the construction of “Silent Vessels”.
